Objectives:
At the end of this unit participants will be able to:
1.Understand and discuss the purpose for maintaining consumer confidentiality

4. Be familiar with any program Policies and Procedures associated with confidentiality
"You must be aware of the fact that these are not skills you must acquire somewhere down the road. From the very first day that you began working you are required by law to know, understand, and assist in providing these protections. The knowledge of this information is as much for your protection as it is for the protection of your consumer. By knowing the law you will be less likely to violate it..."
"As a care provider, you must be very careful not to give this information out without specific directions to do so from your supervisors or administrators. If someone, even a family member, requests to view personal records always tell them that they must speak to your supervisor first. Even if they have "informed consent", (see definition below), your supervisor should be made aware of this before records are examined..."
"Confidential Information:
Written, computerized, or verbal communication of a personal nature. This information may include:
1. the fact that a person is or is not a client
2. information transmitted in confidence by the client to providers in the course of diagnosis, treatment, or other services
3. information regarding a client transmitted in confidence by members of the client's family or by other persons to providers..."
"You will soon become aware of which records you will be using and which are usually being kept in locked file cabinets or desk drawers. Unless you have permission, you are not allowed to read information that is being kept in locked areas. It will also be your responsibility to make certain that the files you do have access to are not left lying about unless you are working on them. If there is a cabinet, bookcase, or other area in which these records are kept, be sure to return them to their proper storage place before leaving the facility..."
"Always consider your own expectations. Most individuals do not want people spreading gossip or giving out personal information about themselves or their families. You certainly would not want to know that someone you trust is providing this information to others. Many state laws were written to protect your privacy. Remember that these laws were written for your consumers, as well..."
