This comprehensive overview of language development and basic communication skills, has been created for program administrators and individuals seeking a basic knowledge of language development and techniques for enhancing interpersonal interactions. It encourages direct care workers to be observant of the consumer's methods of communication. Tips are included to enhance interactions with non-verbal or limited language folks.

4. Know and use some basic techniques for maximizing communication with those who have limited communicative abilities

"Communication is the exchange of ideas or information between two or more people. This involves both the initiation of language and responding, otherwise known as reciprocity. From the earliest stages of development, the interaction between child and adult begins to be shaped. The initial level of interaction directly impacts the ongoing development of communication skills..."

"Communication begins with orientation. Orientation is the process of movement, either by visually looking, reaching for, or whole body movement towards a desired person or object. If an infant is unable to perceive the location of desired people or items within her or his immediate environment, the motivation to seek out those things becomes diminished..."

"Perhaps the first real expressive language is crying. At some point, the baby's brain makes the connection between that easily produced sound and the care provider's response. Purposeful crying will replace random crying as this verbal action continues to consistently get a reaction from adults. Orientation and body movement generally become the next step in the chain of communication development..."
