"An Introduction to People First Language
And Person-Centered Planning"
by Michael S. True, M.Ed
This introductory packet has been created for program administrators and individuals seeking a basic knowledge of these issues. People First Language and Person-Centered Planning have become key concepts in the health care field today. It is often difficult to find ways to teach new direct care workers the basic elements of these concepts. As with all of the TruEnergy Enterprises packets, I have taken great pains to break this information down into an easy-to-understand, easy-to-use dialog. Training includes useful definitions, background histories, and guidelines and examples for daily use.
This read-along training can be presented in a group setting or given privately to an individual needing to enhance current knowledge and skills. Packet kits include questions for discussion, a pre and post test, and test key.
Topic Headings Include: How Labeling Affects Us All, Respect = Putting People First, Using Labels Effectively, What to Say and When to Say It , Person-Centered Planning - the Basics, History and Evolution of P-C P, Working Models of P-C P, and The Direct Care or Treatment Provider's Role.

"How and why we label people is the topic of this packet. Whether we know it or not, we do it all of the time. But labels change as our knowledge of the world around us and our social attitudes change. When dealing with the public it is very important to be up-to-date in our understanding and use of labels."
"In a nutshell, Person Centered Planning refers to a method of examining the individual needs of a consumer and how programs and services can be used, adapted, or expanded to meet those needs. Some Person Centered Planning approaches include: Essential Lifestyle Planning, Individual Service Design, Personal Futures Planning, MAPS, and PATH. In all approaches, communicating directly with the consumer, (or a legal representative), to determine his or her needs must occur in the planning process."
"Both People First Language and Person Centered Planning are a direct result of a human rights movement that began in the late 1960’s and is continuing to evolve to this day. It is all about how we are assisting people who once were treated poorly or ignored altogether due to their physical or mental status. As our knowledge of the human condition continues to grow, so does our understanding. It is important that persons with disabilities, those with significant or long-term illnesses or injuries, and the elderly not be treated as less than or unequal to those who do not share those same conditions. We are, after all, all human.
"As a society, we have come to insist on full inclusion and the least restrictive environment wherever and whenever it is appropriate. When planning for education, employment, daily living, leisure activities, or the use of local programs and services, it is vital that all of the key people involved in the process be a part of the planning team. It is equally important that actual community settings be evaluated for accessibility. We would want no less for our families or ourselves."
"Whether we are talking to or about a consumer we should always seek to keep the individual’s feelings in mind. Those feelings are no different than our own. Bringing our consumers into conversations concerning their future and encouraging choice making and the voicing of personal preferences increases everyone’s ability to succeed."
"Everyone has the right to live a “normal” life, and to be treated with dignity, and respect. This is not just a noble ideal; it must be a goal we are continually striving to achieve. By working together, everyone benefits!"
