"Introduction to Training Techniques"

by Michael S. True, M.Ed

This comprehensive overview of Training Techniques has been created for program administrators and individuals who need a basic understanding of commonly used teaching strategies for special populations. Especially written for "newcomers" to the field of direct care and skill training, content is presented in an easy-to-digest text. Clear definitions coupled with tips and suggestions build self-confidence for direct care and skill trainers as they move towards implementation of consumer program objectives.

This read-along training can be presented in a group setting or given privately to an individual needing to enhance current knowledge and skills. Packet kits include questions for discussion, a pre and post test, and test key.

Topic Headings Include: Learning Modes, Barriers to Learning, Motivation, Planning Training Activities, Setting Goals, Creating a Task Analysis, Positive Reinforcement, Scheduling, Prompting Techniques, Fading, Generalization, and more! NOW INCLUDES SPANISH VERSION!

Objectives:

At the end of this unit participants will be able to:

1. Discuss and assess conditions that create "barriers to learning"

2. Know and understand the basic steps involved in planning a training event

3. Produce a task analysis

4. Understand and use various prompting techniques and the principals of "fading"

5. Discuss and assess training conditions that are affected by an individuals inability to "generalize"

Sample Text:

"You may wish to consider asking the person if they would like to do or have some special reward if they accomplish the task. This also gives you an edge in the process. If they have something to look forward to, the task is more likely to be completed. Know the individual well enough to provide preferred items or activities. And have these things on hand immediately after the task has been completed. This is very important. Do not promise something for the next day or that may be unavailable. Giving a reward needs to be done immediately after the task is finished in order to complete the experience in a positive way..."

"There is a condition known as "prompt dependency". You must be aware of a natural tendency of many people to allow you to move them through an activity or give verbal guidance before they proceed. If you always provide such support, they will always expect it to be a natural part of the task. Because of this, you want to give the individual the chance to start the task independently or with a visual or tactual reminder. Allow a little time for this to happen. If it does not happen naturally, point to your visual cue or give the individual the related object. Once they understand that it is time for a training session to begin, use needed cues, then Partial Physical assistance, and finally Hand-over-Hand assistance, (as needed), to get through the task. This allows for movement towards independence...."

"On some days you may want to "test" your student by reducing the amount of assistance you would normally use to begin or continue the activity to determine if any parts of it can be done independently or with a lesser amount of intervention. This will be important to the process of documenting progress, as well.

When the individual is doing 80% of the task independently, continue to reinforce their success but consider adding another step or task to their training objectives. And don't forget, all of us need some assistance from time to time, depending on our circumstances. You don't want to criticize someone who is having a "rough day"..."

Discussion Questions: (sample)

3. Give examples of a "student" you have worked with whom required one or more of the levels of physical assistance discussed in this manual.
